[Japon] Glitches and design flaws limit value of Japan’s COVID-19 tracing app

Digital contact tracing is becoming increasingly crucial in Japan, where the third wave of COVID-19 infections is overwhelming contact tracers at public health centers and testing their capacity to the limits. Some of these facilities are now marshaling their contact-tracing workforce toward a tiny pool of patients deemed particularly high risk, leaving the vast majority of cases at the mercy of a state-developed tracing app known as the Contact-Confirming Application (COCOA).

Les équipements automatisés jouent un rôle essentiel dans les efforts du gouvernement pour mener des campagnes de tests de masse dans le but de localiser les infections au COVID-19 pour isoler et traiter plus rapidement et plus précisément les patients. Cette tendance est illustrée par le laboratoire « Huoyan » (« Œil de Feu »), qui a été mis en service le 9 janvier dans un gymnase local à Shijiazhuang, capitale de la province du Hebei (nord de la Chine), un foyer récent du coronavirus.

[Chine] Un système à intelligence artificielle chinois peut analyser jusqu’à 2 000 scanners du COVID-19 par jour

Le système d’assistance soutenu par l’intelligence artificielle pour analyser les images tomodensitométriques des patients atteints de COVID-19 ouvert au monde en ce début avril a profité à plus de 100 établissements médicaux étrangers. Le nombre total de visites aux heures de pointe a atteint plus de 2 000 par jour.


[Myanmar] COVID-19 Recovery: Myanmar Needs to Move Towards Digital Transformation

As the COVID-19 pandemic forced lockdowns across the globe, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of digital technologies in various aspects of human life. Restrictions in mobility, closing of economic activities, social distancing norms, shutting down of education and health services, entertainment and mass gatherings have all led to people moving to digital platforms to stay connected with each other and engage in necessary economic and social activities. Contact tracing applications, e-permits, e-clinics, e-health bulletins, dashboards of data, cloud-based clinical data hosting, sharing and collaboration between public health researchers, awareness building apps and chatbots have come to play a significant role during this pandemic period. However, such a transition has not been smooth as many developing countries faced severe forms of digital inequality, especially in rural areas. Cities and young people have adopted to the digital world faster compared to those living in rural areas. ICT infrastructure is also a major constraint. For example in Myanmar over 50 per cent communities do not have access to ICTs. It is in this context, addressing challenges of e-governance, particularly in creating a digital interface between citizen and government.

[Singapour] Singaporeans return to work, using smartphone apps and QR codes to fight coronavirus

– Singapore, along with Taiwan, South Korea and China, was quick to embrace technology to map the coronavirus outbreak early on with contact tracing, robots and drones

– Singapore has also started handing out Bluetooth-enabled contact tracing devices, starting with elderly people who are vulnerable to infection and may not own smartphones
